The Jacobs Center places great emphasis on interdisciplinary research on aging. It also offers a structured Ph.D. Program in Productive Adult Development, and Executive Seminars. Applicants should demonstrate accomplishment in both teaching and research and are expected to have a strong record of scholarly productivity, a commitment to institutional excellence and the demonstrated ability to obtain research funding (possibly on the European level), but also work in a team on the joint research program of the Center. Any experience in inter­disciplinary settings will be considered a strong point. In principle, our language of instruc­tion is English. The position can be filled on any of the three levels of professorship (full, associate and assistant) depending on the specific qualifications of the applicant. Salaries will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial 7-years contracts may be extended based upon performance and the university’s needs. The annual teaching load is three courses at three hours each. Preferably, work at the Jacobs Center should begin in September 2011.

What you can expect:
You will be responsible for product and process development for applications in either the
automotive, footwear, and cosmetics industries or the wood composite and coatings industries. In addition to leading a research lab and optimizing chemical processes, you will develop new products from the initial laboratory test phases on into production. You will also translate successful research concepts into practical solutions in cooperation with customers as well as internal and external Research and Development, Production and Marketing departments. Beyond this, you will manage projects, make presentations in international teams, and ensure competitiveness by monitoring and evaluating scientific trends.
What we expect:
Besides a PhD in Chemistry with outstanding grades, you have, ideally, acquired broad knowledge of Organic or Polymer Chemistry along with basic knowledge of Process Engineering. Beyond these abilities in your field, you have a very good command of English and excellent communication skills. The work will focus on the integrated management of heterogeneous user related information derived from different (personal) devices with the help of a portal. .
The research group has broad experience within the area of Web Portal technology, semantic description of resources and context-adaptability.
The PhD research will be performed under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Birgitta König-Ries and Prof. Dr. Martin Welsch in cooperation with the IBM Germany Research & Development Laboratories at Böblingen, Germany.
The aim of the project is to perform research and develop prototypes that use Web Portals to provide an integrated, user centric management of heterogeneous devices and the event and data oriented information they can provide and the services they can offer.
Requirements:
We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:
  • An excellent Masters or equivalent degree in Computer Science or a closely related field
  • Experience within the fields of context modeling, user modeling, semantic web, mobile application development and/or Web Portal technology are of advantage
  • Very good programming and software engineering skills
  • Very good communicative skills in English, both in speaking and in writing
  • Very good teaming and communication skills, as this project will be executed as a joint venture between the IBM R&D Lab in Boeblingen and the University of Jena
  • Skills in German are of advantage
